Here at Footsteps2Fuji, we're big supporters of adding a stop or two to your travel itinerary that are unique and unusual. Looking for public bathrooms while on holiday may not count as "unusual", but planning your trip around them certainly is! I have heard of travellers to Japan planning to see places that they've seen in their favourite movies before: A cocktail from The Park Hyatt Tokyo, following Bill Murray's character in "Lost in Translation", or wandering through Meiji Jingu Gaien Park, the inspiration for the park in the Studio Ghibli film "Spirited Away".
Before your trip to Japan, take yourself to the cinema and see the Cannes Film award winning film "Perfect Days" - then pick your favourite locations from our link below and take a short detour fully experience them for yourself!

A Simple Yet Profound Journey
This heart warming movie follows the story of Minoru, a man who finds fulfilment and purpose in his unexpected career: a public bathroom caretaker in Shibuya, Tokyo - just around the corner from the famous Shibuya Scramble. "Perfect Days" is a surprisingly touching film that explores themes of beauty in the ordinary, finding satisfaction in everyday tasks, and the importance of community. It will certainly leave you with lots to contemplate... which seems quite fitting, really.
From Documentary to Unexpected Delight
Believe it or not, "Perfect Days" wasn't always destined for the cinematic spotlight. The project began as a documentary exploring the unique public bathroom architecture program in Tokyo. The city council had partnered with famous architects to create beautiful and functional public restrooms throughout the city. It was during this documentary process that Kore-eda became fascinated by Minoru, the unassuming caretaker, and his dedication to his work.
